It is a little expensive to live or even to travel in the city, but with proper planning, you can make it a trip worth your visit.  Affordable travel is possible; although you may not be able to do so with rock bottom budget, but a reasonable budget travel arrangements can be made.

If you opt for a hotel in London, it is going to work out expensive, and here we are not even looking at the five star hotels, which are out of reach for most except people with very heavy wallets. 

A regular hotel near a tourist attractions in London costs over $200/day.  The advantage of staying here is the ease of access to the tourist attractions.  There are cheaper hotels that are not very close to the tourist places in the city, and you may need to take a bus or a taxi to reach your destination.  These hotels that are far away from the city can help you save big on the money spent on accommodation.  Most of them include continental breakfast and meals.

Hostel Accommodation - Located in the heart of London, these hostels cost only a fraction of what the expensive hotels cost. Some of the good hostels in the city are St. Christopher's Inn, Globetrotters and YHA.  Hostels are best for youngsters.  Although, there may not be much privacy, they are much cheaper. 

But when booking, try not to use agencies for booking.  It is always better to call the hotel directly and place your booking.  Do some browsing on the internet and you will find hundreds of hostels, hostels and inns that you may find of interest. 

The idea to get a good deal is to book well in advance and not just before your travel date.  London having tropical climate, you cannot trust the weather and there may be days you just cannot step out.  Look for a comfortable room with a great bed and a good bath. If you enjoy good food, London can make your stay beautiful, as long as you get out and explore all the hundreds of cafes, dining places and bakeries that the city offers.

Getting back to accommodation, look for hotels with a lower star rating when in London, instead of spending huge amounts of money on luxury.  The idea is to see the place and not to relax in a costly hotel room. 

In spite of being expensive, most tourist attractions in London are free. Just plan well ahead of your travel and do your research, and you will have the best holiday of your life in London.
